HSD Summer School: Thriving in Complexity
Intended for Dutch-speaking participants : consultants, change professionals, and managers who are looking for insights and practical perspectives to better master working in complexity
Content
For one full week, you will immerse yourself in Human Systems Dynamics (HSD). HSD views all human systems — whether an individual, group, organization, network, or entire society — as complex adaptive systems. The word complex refers to the large quantity and variety of parts and relationships involved. Adaptive refers to the self-organizing process within the system that enables behavior suited to the environment. Such behavior is essentially unpredictable, but according to HSD, we can strive to better understand the system and influence that self-organizing process incrementally.
Acting effectively within complexity is “simple, but not easy” (one of Glenda Eoyang’s favorite sayings). However, this week provides ample space, insight, and practical perspectives to help you get a grip on working in complexity, enabling you to apply it in your own professional practice afterwards and create movement in complex contexts and challenges with more enjoyment and less effort.
Working language
The working language of this five-day online programme is English. We will follow up this HSD Summer School with a face-to-face certification programme in Dutch. Both the HSD Summer School week and the following HSD Certification Programme are intended for Dutch-speaking participants.
Outcomes
Learn to enjoy and embrace complexity through a better understanding of the different manifestations of complexity.
Become more agile in your actions within complexity by applying the many models and methods offered by HSD.
Connect and integrate HSD thinking with your favorite theories, concepts, models, and interventions.
Final opportunity to participate in this live programme with Dr. Glenda Eoyang, founder of the HSD Institute.
Who is it for?
This HSD Summer School offers a rich deepening and enrichment of various traditions within systems thinking. It is particularly suitable for consultants, change professionals, and managers who already have some background in systems thinking. They will appreciate the way HSD builds on theories and concepts already familiar to them while complementing these with additional enriching concepts. Above all, it offers a wealth of practical approaches that make the transition from analysis to action — Adaptive Action in HSD terminology — possible.
For consultants, change professionals, and managers who are new to systems thinking or unfamiliar with it, we do expect a foundational understanding of organisation and change management. During this HSD Summer School, they will become acquainted with an integral and connecting systems theory, and the richness of practical tools will also enable them to actively apply it in practice.
This course is hosted by SIOO (Inter-University Foundation for Organisational Science and Change Management, Utrecht, NL), in collaboration with Pattern Partners (members of the global HSD network).
